Son of famed Ascadian adventurer Marcellus Valentinius, Wendell was raised with one purpose in mind: to elevate his family to noble status. His father, though tremendously wealthy and accomplished, a pillar of Avilan society, is a member of the Equestrian Class, a lesser class not eligible for high public office. As such, his honor and worth in society is held back solely by his birth. He sought to marry his only son Wendell into the Senatorial Class, thus ensuring that his legacy would ascend to the heights he himself could not.
However, so enamored was his son of the tales he would tell of his heroic and daring exploits in his youth, that he did not look forward to a life of leisure, being studded to some cash-hungry nobleman's daughter. Instead, he dreamed of following in his father's footsteps, flying airships, battling dragons, and mastering the arts of swordplay and magic.
His father did not approve, and when he cut his son off from funds used to purchase tutoring in these areas, Wendell fled Avila altogether, seeking a new avenue of adventure in Saillonne. Armed with only his possessions and a small treasury of petty cash (in the reckoning of a man who's never known the value of a copper piece), he boldly seeks to establish himself as a worthy successor to his father, and indeed, to exceed him.
